Warkworth is 3 miles south of our location. Towering over the town and the river Coquet is the magnificent 12th Century Warkworth Castle, once the stronghold of the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland. Alnwick has a good range of shops and is the home of the present Duke of Northumberland. Alnwick Castle is world famous as "Hogwart's Castle" having been used as a location for the "Harry Potter" movie series. Northumberland abounds with historic castles, houses and battle sites. The dramatic ruins of the coastal fortress of Dunstanburgh Castle are a fine example. Visited and painted by English artist JMW Turner, the castle can be reached via a refreshing, coastal walk from the small fishing port of Craster (world famous for its oak-smoked kippers).

Other notable locations in Northumberland include .... Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne. This is further North and is the jewel in the crown of Northumberland's beautiful coastline, reached by a narrow causeway which is cut off at high tide. The castle on the island is now owned by the National Trust.

Other National Trust properties in the area include Wallington Hall. formerly the home of the Trevalyn family, and Cragside, built by Lord Armstrong, who also owned Bamburgh Castle.
